How We Test
Real supplements. Real labs. Real protocols. Here's what happens before we write a review.
We don't write reviews from marketing materials. Every product on this site gets tested until we trust it or until lab results contradict label claims. That means actual 90-day protocols with actual beta-glucan testing and certificate of analysis verification.
Minimum requirements
Nothing gets reviewed until it completes a 30-day minimum testing period with daily tracking. Most products see 90 days or more. A mushroom coffee we're skeptical about might log 120 days before we're ready to say anything definitive, because some effects don't show up until week six when the loading phase completes or week twelve when the subjective benefits plateau.
We test products ourselves before recommending them. A powder that dissolved cleanly in our hot water tests might clump in your morning coffee. A capsule that worked for our testing might cause stomach issues for you. Single-tester results miss nuances, which is why we track variation and report limitations.
What we actually measure
We verify everything. A supplement claiming 30% beta-glucans goes to independent labs. We request COAs from manufacturers and cross-check them against our own results, then track subjective effects using standardized daily assessments at the same time each day, measuring dissolution times, taste, and any side effects that come up.
We verify or contradict every manufacturer claim. If a company says their extract uses fruiting bodies only, we test for grain starch markers that indicate mycelium. If they say organic certified, we verify the certification number. The specs on the label are a starting point, not an answer.
Lab testing
Independent lab testing covers three areas:
- Beta-glucan content - Active polysaccharide measurement
- Heavy metals - Lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury screening
- Microbiological testing - Contamination checks when warranted
When lab results differ from label claims by more than 10%, we report it. When products show contamination, we say so publicly.
Subjective tracking
Over 90 days minimum, four things get tracked daily:
- Daily effects - Focus, energy, sleep quality, stress response
- Timing - Morning vs evening, with food vs empty stomach
- Dosage response - Standard dose vs higher doses
- Side effects - Any adverse reactions or tolerance issues
We use standardized assessment scales. "Improved focus" gets quantified with specific examples and compared against baseline measurements taken before the protocol started.
When we update reviews
Formulations change. Manufacturers get acquired by companies with different standards. When we find out about changes, we re-test the new version. If a product we recommended starts failing lab tests six months later, we update the review to say so. These pages aren't static.
What disqualifies a product
- Failed beta-glucan testing - If lab results show less than 15% when label claims 30%
- Heavy metal contamination - Above safe limits
- Mycelium on grain - When marketing claims fruiting body
- No COA provided - Refusal to share certificates of analysis
- Inconsistent batches - Wide variation between samples
We don't hide failures. When products don't meet our standards, we publish those results even if it costs affiliate commissions.
Testing location
Products are tested in real-world conditions, not controlled lab environments. Morning coffee, pre-workout timing, evening wind-down protocols. We test how supplements actually get used, not how they perform in ideal conditions.
